Dear Incoming Student,
On behalf of the Electrical Engineering Department at Columbia University,
I am thrilled to welcome you to our graduate program. We are very much
looking forward to having you join the Columbia community. Columbia
Electrical Engineering is a hub of technology, innovation and research in
the heart of New York City and it will offer you an abundance of
opportunities. To name a few, you will be taking rigorous classes and you
will gain valuable experiences through course projects and lab work. You
will have an array of opportunities through internships, research, and job
opportunities in New York City and beyond. We are ready for the start of
the on-campus program - and it all starts in August!
The University is working actively on all potentially challenging issues in
regards to students’ arrivals in the late summer. Let us know as soon as
you need assistance to make your arrival smooth.
Below is a snapshot of key activities that will help you be successful in
this program.
Career Placement: Jennifer Lee <http://www.ee.columbia.edu/students-0 >, our
Director of Career Placement, Events & External Relations, who is also an
EE alumna, will work with you to formulate a career plan, build practical
skills and help you launch your careers. Jennifer works closely with
recruiters on internship and full-time opportunities for students and
partners with employers and alumni to host targeted events including
company info sessions, tech talks, and roundtable discussions. A Career
Survey, which you will be asked to complete, will be sent by the Graduate
Career Placement (GCP) team in July.
Course Registration: Elsa Sanchez, our Director of Student Affairs, will
reach out to you with important information about pre-registration for your
first semester of classes. She will offer you guidance on course
registration and enrollment during your time here.
Engineering Welcome Day and Orientation: The Fall 2025 New Graduate Student
Orientation for all Columbia Engineering students will take place on
Thursday, August 21, 2025 and Friday 22, 2025. See more details in
https://www.gradengineering.columbia.edu/new-student-orientation .
PDL Program: The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences has a Professional
Development and Leadership (PDL) program
<https://pdl.engineering.columbia.edu/content/sessions > - ENGI E4000, a
mandatory course, which starts towards the end of August, that will teach
you the skills needed to succeed academically and professionally. Participation
is required for all MS students and is tuition-free. If you cannot make the
summer session, you must complete the program during the semester. Please
feel free to contact the PDL team directly (seas-pdl at columbia.edu) if you
have any questions or concerns.
EE, CE, and QST Graduate Student Orientation: will take place on Thursday,
August 28th, at 10:30AM (at Miller Theater). Please check out our website
<https://www.ee.columbia.edu/ee-and-ce-graduate-student-orientation > over
the summer for updates on the 2025 agenda (we will continue updating this
page throughout the summer). Please note that Orientation is mandatory.
EE and CE MS Student Advising: Between August 28th and September 3rd, all
EE MS graduate students will meet with their faculty advisers who will be
assigned to you a few days before the orientation. QST MS students will
meet with their advisors during the orientation.
We look forward to seeing you soon. However, if for some reason your plans
changed and you will not join us in the Fall, please reply to this email to
let us know.
Congratulations once again on your admission to Columbia Electrical
Engineering and we look forward to welcoming you on campus and to an
exciting Fall semester.
I wish you a wonderful summer!
