Fall 2025 Course Power Electronics (ELEN 4361)

*Course Description*
Power converters are a key technology enabling electrification and
renewable energy, interfacing wind and solar power to the electric grid and
powering electric vehicles. Power electronics appear in a wide range of
applications, including phone/laptop chargers, home appliances, automotive
systems, high voltage AC transmission systems, microgrids, and industrial
applications.
Learn how to model, design, control, and simulate power converters.

This course teaches the theory of how power converters work, and how to
apply it to real-world design problems. You will be able to design
converters in industry or pursue graduate research in power electronics.

*Instructor*
This course will be taught by Noah Silverman (nhs2134 at columbia.edu). At
Columbia, he is part of the MPlab and researches high-power inverters for
electric vehicles in partnership with Tau Motors. Previously, he spent nine
years in industrial R&D building high voltage switching converters. He
designed and tested undersea microgrids, high-power radio transmitters, and
pulse-power systems for particle accelerators. He previously studied power
electronics at MIT and CU Boulder.

*Time and Location*
Mondays 1:10-3:40, Hamilton Hall 516

*Prerequisites*
This is a first year graduate level class open to advanced senior
undergraduates. Prerequisites are:
ELEN E3331 Electronic Circuits
ELEN E3801 Signals and Systems
